| The Lowcountry
& Resort Islands Region of South Carolina includes the
four, southern-most counties in the State, bordered
on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by
the Savannah River and the state of Georgia.
The Region begins on the
northern end with the quiet, family, beach Town of Edisto
Beach. Traveling south along the coast brings you to
historic Beaufort, Port Royal, Parris Island and Bluffton,
and then to internationally-famous, Hilton Head Island.
If your route takes you
down busy Interstate 95, you will pass Walterboro, home
of the South Carolina Artisans Center and thenYemassee,
famous as a destination during World War II for thousands
of US Marine recruits on their way to train at Parris
Island. Continuing down I-95 will bring you to Point
South, the location of the Lowcountry Visitors Center
& Museum, and the gateway interchange to US 17 and Beaufort.
Driving farther south brings you to the lovely town
of Ridgeland, and the Blue Heron Nature Trail; a bit
farther and you are in Hardeeville and the Savannah
National Wildlife Refuge.
Exploring further inland,
you can visit quaint Southern towns like Hampton, Varnville
and Estill, with interesting museums, friendly people
and fun festivals.
